Lignara I — a one-of-one lamp made from a reclaimed roof beam that had already lived for more than seventy years.

Lignara I illuminated
Previous life

Before it was light, it held a roof.

This piece began as a spruce beam in a house in Želešice that stood for more than seventy years. When the house came down, the timber was headed for a skip.

The knots, weathering, split face and darkened grain were kept rather than sanded away. A window was cut through the body so the filament bulb sits inside the wood, and the hron.work maker mark was burned into the surface.

It is finished only with wax and oil, so the surface can be renewed instead of replaced. Inside is a 12V filament bulb powered over USB-C, with a construction intended to remain openable and repairable.

The marks are not defects. They are evidence that the material had a life before this one.
